Second Grade

First Quarter Learning Goals in Second Grade Music
Second grade students at Bayfield Primary School will be working on rhythm patterns during the first quarter of the year. Students will learn to perform, read and write rhythm patterns using quarter notes ("ta"), eighth note pairs ("titi") and quarter rests ("shh"). Here are some examples of these patterns:
In addition to this learning, students will learn about and then apply the expressive elements of dynamics (the soft and the loud in music) and tempo (the fast and the slow in music). Edvard Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King" will be a primary focus for the expressive use of each of these elements.

Second Quarter Learning Goals in Second Grade Music
During the second quarter, second grade students will work towards a performance in December. Learning will be focused on good technique for performance, including vocal tone, listening skills and learning to apply feedback and critique to improve performance. Students will continue to practice rhythm patterns and will learn to apply the expressive elements of dynamics and tempo to their own performance.
Third Quarter Learning Goals in Second Grade Music
Second grade musicians will begin working with melodic patterns during the second half of the year. Using solfege syllables and curwen hand signs, students will learn to perform melodic patterns using do, re, and mi. Melodic notation will be introduced and then practiced both vocally and instrumentally on a variety of classroom instruments.

At this time, second graders will also begin study of different instrument families through Prokofiev's story, "Peter and the Wolf."
Fourth Quarter Learning Goals in Second Grade Music
In the final quarter of the year, second graders will work on the rhythmic ideas of half note ("two"), half rest ("shhhh"), whole note ("four") and whole rest ("shhhhhhhh").

Students will also study a few composers (like Greig, Prokofiev, Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven) and their famous works (In the Hall of the Mountain King, Peter and the Wolf, Surprise Symphony, Variations on "Ah, je dirais-vous maman," and Fur Elise).
